Ram - Scion of Ikshvaku by Amish

Amish's brilliance shines in a new and unexpected way in his book Ram-Scion of Ikshvaku.

The book is a part of the Ram Chandra Series. It was first launched on June 22, 2015 at Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) by the author. It is followed by Sita-Warrior of Mithila and the last book of the trilogy is Raavan-Enemy of Aryavarta
The book is contained in 378 pages. It is a fantasy book based on Ram, the legendary Indian King, the ideal man who is regarded as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and worshiped by Hindus across the globe.

The story begins with the defeat of King Dasratha by the Lankan trader Raavan. As the story unfolds we see how the life of the indomitable King of Sapta Sindhu was saved by his wife and second Queen of Kosala, Kaikeyi, as he was defeated by Kuber's general Raavan at Karachapa.

While in Ayodhya, the first queen Kaushalya gives birth to a son who came to be known as Ram. Dasratha blames Ram for his defeat. And for the first time the monopoly over trade gets shifted from Emperor of Sapta Sindhu to the Lankan Trader Raavan causing economic crisis.

The book then discusses the the birth of the other three sons of Dasratha namely, Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughana. The princes complete their schooling under the guidance of Vishwamitra. Lakshman was more close to Ram. Everyone turned towards Shatrughana for any information or answer related to the vedas, as he was the bookworm.

The next episode takes us to Mithila and the marriage of the Ayodhan princes. And how Ram defeats Raavan in Mithila.Though it is based on Ram, at many points the story greatly deviates from what is mentioned in the epic by Goswami Tulsi das and Maharshi Valmiki.

Overall, it is a great read for people interested in Indian mythology and fiction.

Takeaways - Sometimes truth causes pain and suffering.  At such times, silence is preferred.
>  It is more important to be right than to be first.
>  One of the few advantages of being disliked is that you don’t need to fret over what others think about you.
>  Some good can emerge from the most horrific of events. There is something positive hidden in every negative, and something negative in every positive. Life is complicated, and a balanced person can see both sides.

My rating - 8 out of 10.
